Texas Theatre goes deep on 4K restorations while the Nasher closes a Dallas survey

August 14, 2026

First edition, built for the window of Fri Aug 14 through Sun Aug 23. DFW had enough worth doing that there was no reason to look at Austin or Houston. Stadium-scale pop is dominating the calendar this weekend, so the good stuff is in Oak Cliff and the Arts District. One Charlie-friendly pick is included, plus two scene-tracking names for experimental music.

  1. Nic Nicosia: Everyday Surreal closes Aug 23 at the Nasher

A 25-year survey of one of Dallas's most significant living artists, weighted toward his move into sculpture in the 2010s, with over 70 objects plus drawings, photographs, and films. The install is staged to feel like the slightly wrong domestic environments in the work itself, which is the reason to see it in person rather than in reproduction. Last day is Sunday Aug 23, so this is a two-weekend decision and then it is gone.

  2. Roy Lichtenstein in the Studio, split across the Nasher and the DMA

Both institutions are showing prints, drawings, and sculptures from a joint gift of more than fifty works from the Lichtenstein Foundation. The Nasher leg runs through Oct 24, so it is the low-pressure Arts District option you can do on a walk between the two buildings. Good pairing with the Nicosia show if you want one focused afternoon downtown.

  3. The Piano in 4K at the Texas Theatre

Jane Campion's film in a new 4K presentation, Friday Aug 14 at 6:40 pm and Sunday Aug 16 at 3:30 pm. Michael Nyman's score is the draw on a real sound system, and the Sunday matinee is the easier slot if the evening is spoken for. Tickets are online and the room rarely sells out for matinees.

  4. Manhunter 40th anniversary 4K, with Miami Vice on Aug 23

Manhunter screens in 4K Friday Aug 14 at 7 pm and Sunday Aug 16 at 7:30 pm, and the theater follows it with Miami Vice on Sunday Aug 23 at 5 pm, co-presented by There Are Too Many Movies. This is effectively a two-weekend Michael Mann synth-and-architecture course, and Manhunter's Shriekback and Klaus Schulze cues are the closest thing on this list to your electronics interests. If you only pick one, take the 4K.

  5. Kaiju Go! 2026, Saturday 2 pm at the Texas Theatre

A daytime live event in the Texas Theatre's live programming slate, Saturday Aug 15 at 2 pm, monster movie themed. Daytime and loosely structured usually means more tolerance for a kid who needs to move, and the Texas Theatre lobby and bar area gives you somewhere to decompress without leaving. Confirm the format and whether it is all ages before committing, since the listing is thin on detail.

  6. Frontiers of Flight Museum as the reliable aviation reset

The museum is a KultureCity certified sensory inclusive venue and runs dedicated sensory-friendly days alongside normal admission. For a sensory-seeking six-year-old, a 100,000 square foot hangar floor with 35-plus aircraft is one of the few DFW settings where fast movement and loud interest are not a problem. Worth calling ahead this week to find the next sensory-friendly date rather than guessing.

  7. Little Shop of Horrors, Sunday matinee in the Summer of '86 series

Sunday Aug 16 at 3 pm as part of the theater's 40th anniversary run of 1986 releases. Practical value is the time slot: a 3 pm start leaves the evening intact. Frank Oz puppetry on a big screen also lands differently than streaming it.

  8. The Birdcage on 35mm, Friday Aug 21 (CinéWilde)

A 9 pm 35mm print screening in the theater's CinéWilde series. Actual film prints in DFW are infrequent enough that the format is the reason to go, independent of the title. Late start, so this is a no-kid night.

  9. Dallas Ambient Music Nights and Molten Plains: the two series to track

DAMN pairs experimental sets with live video projection and has taken over the Texas Theatre for its larger showcases, and Molten Plains is a monthly experimental series at Rubber Gloves in Denton curated by Ernesto Montiel and Sarah Ruth Alexander. Neither has a confirmed date inside this window, which is why they are here as follows rather than as plans. Getting on their announcement feeds now is the highest-leverage thing you can do for modular and ambient shows in this region.

  10. North Texas modular synth scene coverage

A Denton Record-Chronicle piece on the growing group of North Texas musicians building sets around modular rigs, and how it feeds the local ambient series. Useful as a map of who is actually performing on this gear nearby, which is faster than trawling venue calendars. Treat it as a name list to follow rather than an event.

  11. 33 Variations at Theatre Arlington, through Aug 30

Moises Kaufman's play braids a dying musicologist's obsession with Beethoven's Diabelli Variations into a present-day family story. It is the closest thing on the calendar to a talk about why a body of work matters, minus the lecture hall. Small house, so it is a calmer alternative to anything happening in Deep Ellum.

  12. Logistics warning: BTS at AT&T Stadium plus four arena shows

BTS plays AT&T Stadium Saturday and Sunday, with Muse and Train at Dos Equis Pavilion and Don Toliver and Megan Moroney at American Airlines Center in the same stretch. Downtown and Arlington traffic, rideshare pricing, and parking will be bad from late afternoon on. If you are going to the Arts District Saturday, go early or go Sunday morning.
