Akira in 4K, Japanese Metalwork Final Weekend, and After-Hours Sensory Science

September 4, 2026

Akira opens a weeklong 4K theatrical run in Oak Cliff, while the Dallas Museum of Art's five-century Japanese metalwork exhibition enters its final weekend. For Charlie, the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History hosts an after-hours sensory session on Saturday evening.

  1. Akira (4K Restoration) at The Texas Theatre

Katsuhiro Otomo's 1988 cyberpunk anime landmark is receiving a weeklong theatrical run in a new 4K restoration on the main screen. The hand-drawn cel animation, dystopian scale, and Geinoh Yamashirogumi score benefit substantially from the upgraded theatrical projection and sound system. Screenings run daily through next week with both matinee and evening showtimes.

  4. Richard Linklater's Slacker on 35mm at The Texas Theatre

Next Friday night, the Texas Theatre's "TX at the Texas" series screens Richard Linklater's 1991 indie classic on an archival 35mm print on the upstairs screen. The film tracks a continuous chain of Austin slackers, street philosophers, and fringe theorists across a single day. It remains a definitive time capsule of pre-tech-boom Texas underground culture.
