Fall race season opens close to home: lake loops, balloons, and a 0.5K

August 17, 2026

First edition. It is mid-August, so everything worth signing up for is in the September to November window, when North Texas races stop being survival exercises. I filtered for things inside roughly a 30 minute drive of Garland (White Rock Lake, Plano, downtown Garland) and for courses that are park trail or closed street rather than office-park loops. Registration prices on most of these step up as race day gets closer, so the two September ones are decide-now items.

  1. Too Hot To Handle Half, 10K, 5K (Sept 12, Dallas)

Run Project's late-summer race in Dallas offers 5K, 10K, and half distances on the same morning. It is the closest of the fall openers to you and historically runs on the White Rock Lake side of town rather than through business parks. Worth it if you want an early-season time check before the cooler races; expect a warm, humid start regardless of the date.

  2. Plano Balloon Festival Half, 10K, 5K, 1K (Sept 19-20)

The 2026 H-E-B/Central Market Plano Balloon Festival runs Sept 17-20 at Oak Point Park and Nature Preserve, with the 5K and 1K on Saturday and the 10K and half on Sunday, launched alongside the morning hot air balloons. The course uses Oak Point's park paths and creek greenbelt, which is about as far from a corporate campus as Plano gets, and it is roughly 25 minutes up from Garland. Entry includes festival admission, so this is the rare race where the rest of the family has something to do afterward, though the crowd and PA noise are worth weighing for a sensory-seeking six year old.

  3. 9th Annual Garland Guzzler 0.5K (Oct 3, downtown Garland)

A 0.5K joke race on closed streets around Garland City Square, 7:00 pm start, $25, capped field and no day-of registration, with a 1970s costume theme this year. It is a five minute drive for you and the shortest possible excuse to run on closed downtown pavement. Price goes up after Sept 13 and spots were already limited when I checked.

  4. DRC's The Half, 10K and 5K at White Rock Lake (Nov 1)

The Dallas Running Club's 51st edition starts at Norbuck Park and runs the White Rock Lake trails, which is the best local combination of nature course and real race organization. Packet pickup is Oct 30-31 at Luke's Locker on Mockingbird. If you want one goal race this fall, this is the one to build toward: roughly 11 weeks of lead time from now, and the November weather usually cooperates.

  5. One Ale Of A Trail: 9 mile, 5 mile, 3 mile (Nov 7, Little Elm)

Odd distances on lakeside trail near Lewisville Lake, which fits your taste for anything between 5K and half. Honest caveat: Little Elm is about 45 minutes out, past your drive limit, so treat it as a once-in-a-while trip rather than a regular.

  6. Celebration! White Rock 5K and 10K (spring event, note the course)

The White Rock Lake Conservancy fundraiser is a spring race, so nothing to register for now, but the course is the reason to remember it: past Sunset Bay and the stone tables, by the Bath House Cultural Center, and through the Big Thicket on the 10K. Put it on the list for the next cool-season block and watch for registration to open early in the year.

  7. Keeping your own pipeline: findtherun and RunProject's DFW calendar

Two calendars actually maintained for this area: findtherun's Garland page filters by distance and month, and Run Project's DFW calendar lists most locally organized 5K to half events with dates and distance tags. Both surface small church and charity races that never advertise beyond a RunSignUp link. Useful when you want a low-key nearby 5K on two weeks' notice instead of a goal race.
